Understanding Your Grace Period

Missing a payment on your ACA Marketplace plan doesn’t always mean you’ve lost your coverage. Many people enter what’s called a grace period, a limited window during which your policy may still be active. However, this window comes with serious risks most people don’t fully understand until it’s too late.

What Is a Grace Period?

During grace periods, your insurance provider is required to keep your coverage in effect, even if you’ve missed premium payments. It’s crucial to know, however, that:

Your plan may appear active in your member portal, even when claims are being held
Medical claims submitted during this period can be delayed or denied by your provider
If premiums aren’t paid before the deadline, coverage can be cancelled retroactively
Retroactive cancellation means you may have to pay previously covered bills

How Long Do You Have?

The length of your grace period depends on whether you receive a Premium Tax Credit (also called a subsidy) through the Marketplace:

With a Premium Tax Credit

Up to 90 days

If you receive a federal subsidy, you may have up to 3 months* to pay overdue premiums to keep your coverage.

*Claims may still be delayed during this period.

Without a Premium Tax Credit

As little as 30 days

If you don’t receive a subsidy, your grace period may be as short as 30 days, depending on your plan and state. The clock starts the moment you miss a payment.

Understanding Your Grace Period

If your premium was due March 1st and you receive a Premium Tax Credit, your grace period may extend through May 29th. Any claims submitted after that date could be delayed or denied if premiums aren’t brought current before the deadline. Without a Premium Tax Credit, that same March 1st missed payment could put your coverage in jeopardy as early as April 1st.

What Happens If Your Grace Period Ends Without Action?

If your grace period expires without payment, you may face consequences that are difficult—and sometimes impossible—to reverse quickly.

Coverage Terminated

Your plan can be cancelled—possibly retroactively—leaving you fully responsible for healthcare bills from visits and treatments you thought were covered.

Unexpected Medical Bills

Healthcare providers may bill you directly for services already received.

Limited Re-Enrollment Options

You may have to wait until Open Enrollment to purchase a new plan. Special Enrollment Periods exist, but eligibility is limited and time sensitive.

Let’s Keep You Covered Together

Grace periods are not second chances that reset each month. When they close, available coverage options change significantly. The sooner you reach out, the more we can do to help.

How We Help

Our Insurance Advocates have helped many individuals and families navigate ACA coverage challenges. We ensure you understand the healthcare options unique to your situation and help you take action to avoid lapses and loss of coverage.

We’ll help you explore financial assistance programs and sponsorship options you may qualify for, including ways to cover past-due premiums and restore or maintain your active coverage.

Financial assistance, sponsorship programs, and premium support programs are subject to eligibility requirements, funding availability, and program-specific terms, and are not guaranteed.

Review Your Situation

We assess your plan type, payment history, deadline, and overall coverage status so you have a clear picture of where things stand.

Identify What’s Available

We check eligibility for financial support options, including assistance programs that may help bring past-due premiums current or fund alternative coverage.

Help You Take Action

We walk you through every step of the process—what to do, in what order, and by when—so nothing falls through the cracks.

Not everyone qualifies for every option. But many people discover assistance or solutions they had no idea were available. The only way to know what’s possible for your situation is to speak with someone who can check.

Common Questions

Premium Tax Credits (also called subsidies) are refundable federal tax credits that eligible individuals and families can use to afford health insurance through the ACA Marketplace. Qualifying individuals apply this credit each month to lower health insurance premiums. If you receive this credit, you may have a longer grace period than those who don’t.

Possibly, but this is one of the most misunderstood aspects of grace periods. Your plan may continue to appear active, and your doctor may not know your premium is unpaid. However, if your premiums are not brought current by the deadline, your insurer may retroactively deny those claims. This means you could receive a bill for services you believed were covered. Acting quickly reduces this risk significantly.

Not always immediately. Once coverage is terminated at the end of a grace period, most people must wait until the next Open Enrollment period to re-enroll in an ACA plan. In some cases, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to certain qualifying life events, but these are limited and not guaranteed. If your coverage has already lapsed, our Insurance Advocates can help assess what options, if any, may still be available.

In certain situations, yes. Depending on your circumstances, there may be programs or sponsorship opportunities that can help address past-due premiums and support maintaining active coverage. These are not available to everyone, and eligibility depends on your individual situation. A conversation with one of our Insurance Advocates is the only way to know whether you qualify.

We can help with that too. If your current premiums are becoming unmanageable, there may be options worth exploring, from verifying whether you’re receiving all the subsidies you qualify for, to reviewing alternative plans during Special Enrollment windows, to checking eligibility for assistance programs. Reach out before the situation becomes a crisis.

What Should You Do Right Now?

If you believe you may be in a grace period, or if you’re concerned about your ability to maintain coverage, here are the steps to take immediately:

  1. Contact your insurance provider to confirm whether your coverage is active, pending, or at risk. Call the number on your insurance card or log into your member portal.

  2. Find out your exact grace period deadline and get clarity on your current status. Don’t assume you have more time than you do. Here are the key questions to ask:
    • “Is my coverage currently active, or is it at risk of termination?”

    • “What is the exact date my coverage will terminate if I don’t make a payment?”

    • “Are any of my recent claims currently on hold or pending due to non-payment?”

    • “What is the exact amount I need to pay to bring my account current?”

    • “Will my coverage be cancelled retroactively, or from the termination date forward?”

    • “Is a payment plan available?”

  3. Call us at 800-304-4005 to speak with an Insurance Advocate who can review your situation, explain your options, and help you take action before your window closes.

  4. Do not delay. Even a few days can change what’s available. If financial assistance is an option, the sooner we start the review, the better.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

Grace periods end. Open Enrollment isn’t always around the corner, but right now, there may still be a path forward.
